Just when we all thought 2020 could be written off as a null year, the winter solstice brings with it a wonder not seen for almost 800 years. On December 21st, humans can look upward and observe what is called the "Christmas Star" or "Star of Bethlehem." However, rather than a star, this phenomenon is actually a conjuction—otherwise known as a "double planet."

Jupiter and Saturn are set to align so that they appear extremely close together in the sky. Close enough that they look like on big, bright star. These planets align rarely—roughly every 20 years or so—but a conjunction of this proximity is nearly a once in a millennium event. In fact, the last time the Christmas Star was seen by the human eye was on March 4th, 1226.

The Gas Giants will be separated in the night sky by 0.1 degree. It's a closeness that was achieved as recently as 1623, though this instance of the event wasn't observable from Earth due to the planets' nearness to the sun. Whether it's a coincidental holiday treat, or an apology from the year which wouldn't quit—it's fortuitous that we get to catch a glimpse of this incredible sight.

For best viewing in the Southern hemisphere, be sure to set your sights on the low southwestern horizon around 45 minutes post-sunset on December 21st. If you happen to miss its peak, fear not—it's reported that it will still be visible throughout the rest of the week, though fainter and with more distance. Some astronomers suggest turning your gaze to the sky now to watch the two points of light converge night after night.

A telescope isn't necessary, but be sure to avoid tall buildings and mountains! Weather permitting, best viewing conditions will be nearest to the equator, while the worst conditions will be at higher altitudes.

Such momentous events are considered to be astrological omens, so be sure to check what's in store for your star sign! This planetary alignment brings in the Age of Aquarius, and there are big shifts in store for every sign. Does this mean the coming year is going to bring good things? Hopefully. But with our luck, the alignment will open a gate to hell, and the wonders of the Christmas Star will shed light on a rush of seething demons.

Here's hoping for the former.
