2025 has had some high highs, some low lows, and some very weird weirds.
Kendrick Lamar kicked off the year with an incredible and richly symbolic political halftime show, a Sydney Sweeney jeans ad sparked a conversation on eugenics, and Katy Perry went to space for some reason.
In a surprising and exciting political shakeup, Zohran Mamdani won the New York mayoral election, but unfortunately the economy struggled under skyrocketing prices and oppressive tariffs. And, oddly enough, further investigations into the Epstein files sparked rumors of a sexual tryst between Donald Trump and Bill Clinton.
When the bright spots in life don't shine through enough, the hardships in life get too heavy, or when the headlines in the news are just too frickin' bizarre to cope, the place I turn to for comfort is horror books. And you know my go-to is always going to be indie horror.
The end of the year is a time of reflection, and I love to reflect on all the books I've read the past year.
Here are all of the best indie horror books of 2025—and since “best” is such a subjective term, be sure to check out our favorite runners up, as well.

At Dark, I Become Loathsome

Ashley can't find peace in death. But he can bring peace to others.
He has devised a ritual for those who are torn between their wish to die and their desperation for a better life.
Sinking in his own infinite grief, Ashley sparks a connection with Jinx, a potential candidate for his next ritual. He tells him a tale that is as disturbing as it is fascinating.
Now the two men are caught in a spiral of painful revelations and long-buried secrets clawing their way to the surface.
