As someone who was raised on the life-changing horror series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there was a chasm in my life after it ended in 2003. Sure, there were other series, but none of them made me feel the same way.
Other horror shows weren't as fun, and if they were comical, they were too silly and missed the deep, dramatic beats which had me coming back week after week. The women weren't complex enough. I didn't feel strong after watching them.
I waited 13 long years, but then it finally happened: Wynonna Earp. This horror western series was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. Not only did it take up the mantle of feminist horror, it improved upon it.
And while the series ended far too soon after four seasons, each and every episode is something I hold very near and dear to my heart.
And now Wynonna Earp is coming back for one last run with Wynonna Earp: Vengeance.
The Legacy of Wynonna Earp
Wynonna Earp first got her start as a comic book character, created by the ingenious Beau Smith. In 2016, showrunner Emily Andras fleshed out her incredible character for the small screen. The series revolved around the titular Wynonna Earp, a descendent of iconic real-life O.K. Corral lawman Wyatt Earp.
Like generations before her, Wynonna was the next in line to take on the family curse of hunting the undead criminals her ancestor put in the ground. Only when all of them were sent back to hell by one Earp heir would the curse be broken.
Melanie Scrofano stepped into the whiskey-loving, wise-talking, gun-slinging demon killer, while the always dreamy Tim Rozon donned a mustache to portray immortal cowboy and tortured love interest Doc Holliday.
Dominique Provost-Chalkley's Waverly Earp and Katherine Barrell's Nicole Haught came together to become one of the most beloved sapphic couples on television.
Through terrifying villains and steamy love affairs, the heart of the show has always been the unbreakable sense of family brought to life by the cast and creators.
That sense of family extended even to viewers—in fact, the cult following behind this show rallied to get the fourth season up on its feet when it seemed like the show was dead and buried.
It seemed the hope and community Earpers built together paid off once more.
Everything We Know About Wynonna Earp: Vengeance
It was announced just last week that this incredible series would have a brief return in the form of a 90-minute special. Titled Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, the one-off is set to hit the Tubi streaming service later this year, with no exact date yet announced.
The special was written by Andras herself, and Scrofano, Rozon, Provost-Chalkley, and Barrell have all been confirmed to be reprising their roles. Paolo Barzman, who previously helmed 21 episodes of the series, is returning to direct.
There are no firm reveals about what the plot will center around, but the special sees Wynonna and Doc returning home to Purgatory after something “pretty intense” takes place.
Viewers are promised a look at all the ways these characters have grown up since we left them, yet those unfamiliar with the franchise should rest assured that the special will be friendly to new viewers.
Andras has also teased a female villain motivated by revenge.
