Why would you confine yourself to reality when you could color your life with something a tad more absurd? That's where surrealism comes in. Sprinkling in a bit of fantasy alongside fact, surreal horror movies aim to shed rationality. This is a genre which suspends disbelief to the extremes, and once you let go of your grip on sanity and sense, you'll step into a world of unmatched terrors.

Here are eight surreal horror films to drive you mad!

Mother!

Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem star as Mother and Him, a couple whose simple life is turned upside down when some mysterious, uninvited guests arrive at their home. As their peace is disrupted, their relationship is put to the test. But things only get more out of hand as their family grows...

House

A young school girl in Tokyo, Oshare (Kimiko Ikegami), makes the journey to her sick aunt's old country home with six of her classmates. Upon arriving, the girls encounter evil spirits, a demonic cat, a deadly piano, and other chilling hauntings. As humorous and absurd as it is unsettling and nightmarish, this movie is a must-see!

Lamb

This Icelandic folk horror movie follows a couple (Noomi Rapace and Hilmir Snær Guðnason) that adopt the human-lamb hybrid child one of their sheep has just given birth to. Childless themselves, the lamb, Ada, serves as a new start for the family. But a strange entity lurking nearby may have other plans.

Eraserhead

If you haven't seen this David Lynch classic yet, then what are you waiting for? In the midst of his industrial environment, Henry Spencer (Jack Nance) must weather his rage-filled girlfriend and the intolerable screams of his mutant infant. And through it all, he has troubling encounters with the gorgeous girl across the hall and the woman living in his radiator.

Titane

After a terrible car crash as a child, Alexia has a titanium plate fused to her skull. The plate fosters a bond with cars, which helps her in her career as a car model—and gives her more pleasure than the average driver... Given that she's also a serial killer, it's not necessarily the most notable thing about her. But when she starts to experience unexpected changes, she takes on the identity of a boy who went missing years before.

Black Swan

Nabbing the lead role in Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" is an enormous honor, but Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) may not be cut out for the pressure. When a rival ballerina threatens her role, Nina becomes obsessed with perfection. But the more she gives to the role, the more she loses her grip on sanity.

Possession

When Mark (Sam Neil), a professional spy, returns to his home in West Berlin, he finds his wife, Anna (Isabelle Adjani) demanding a divorce. At first, Mark suspects that Anna has been unfaithful. However, as her behavior becomes more and more disturbing, he finds the truth to be much more unsettling.

Videodrome

This David Cronenberg film follows TV programmer Max Renn (James Woods) as he tries to hunt down the ultimate television thrill. As viewers are seduced and controlled by a TV show, Renn becomes wrapped up in the dangerous reality.
