Make way for your new favorite Frankenstein adaptation—Guillermo del Toro is putting his own special spin on this man-made horror.
Any fan of the macabre trusts just about anything in del Toro's spooky hands, but as more and more details emerge about this ambitious project, we can finally start to indulge in our excitement.
The film stars Oscar Isaac as the titular mad scientist, with Jacob Elordi portraying his famed monster. The cast is further fleshed out with greats like Mia Goth as Elizabeth, Ralph Ineson as Professor Krempe, and Christoph Waltz as Dr. Pretorius.
The film, written and directed by del Toro, is said to be a gothic romance—a genre del Toro proved his strength in with Crimson Peak. Viewers can look forward to a richly atmospheric film, featuring architectural ruins that del Toro's sharp aesthetic eye is known for.
According to IMDb, the film takes place 40 years after Frankenstein's monster was believed to have died in a fire. Dr. Pretorius tracks the creature down, hoping to continue with more scientific experiments.
At the Next on Netflix event at the end of January, del Toro previewed about two minutes of this highly-anticipated film. This brief glimpse at what is sure to be a masterpiece showed gruesome clips of Victor Frankenstein slicing through flesh and the monster himself looming like a nightmare over Frankenstein's bed.
At the event, del Toro divulged that he has been trying to make this film for somewhere between 20 and 25 years.
He added, “You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this.”
While unfortunately, this chilling new film won't be out in time for Halloween, it's been confirmed to premiere on Netflix sometime in November.
As for a theatrical run, that too has been confirmed, but there's no word as to how long the engagement will be.
