You know a movie is truly terrifying when even the title creeps you out. On April 6, 2021, Variety announced that Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks: The Return) will executive produce and star in the American reboot of the Austrian horror film, Goodnight Mommy.
Optioned by Amazon Studios, the new take will be directed by Matt Sobel, with a revamped script by Kyle Warren. The original film's directors, Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, will executive produce alongside Watts, which is a very good sign.

Director Matt Sobel gave a quote to Variety for their announcement of the reboot and said “My favorite films are those that invite the audience to step inside their protagonist’s journey. In our re-imagining of Goodnight Mommy, fear of abandonment — and the dreadful realization that those close to us may not be who they seem — create an immersive nightmare, with visceral sensations front and center."
Paris-based production company Playtime can be credited with gaining the rights to remake the film, which will be available on Amazon Prime on a yet-to-be-named date.
The original version of Goodnight Mommy was released in 2014 and is referenced in The Atlantic's review as having "the most cringe-inducing application of Superglue perhaps ever committed to film." Wow, we really hope (are we really saying this?) that they keep that scene in the new one. Watch the trailer for the original film below, and look for the new one to be included here as soon as we have it.
