Some horror is dark. From the color palette of the cover to the content inside, it’s meant to invoke shadows that creep in and smother the light.
But there’s a newer subgenre that does anything but hide—it splatters the blood and gore in vivid technicolor. It’s as sassy as it is brutal, covering the serrated edges of the blades in beautiful visuals that pop like sticky sweet bubblegum.
Books in this subgenre have a certain wit to the tension. They have a saccharine awareness of both the genre and the culture we exist in, and they offer plenty of critiques, subtle or otherwise.
But like the name implies, this horror is meant to be fun. It can’t help but smack your senses, blowing bubbles that splatter everywhere and stick to everything.
Here are nine bubblegum horror books that guarantee to be a screaming good time.
