In 1995, the Washington town of Wenatchee, known as “the apple capital world,” took on a much more sinister moniker: the Salem of the Northwest. Allegations of a child sex trafficking ring being operated by numerous adults in the town led to the arrest of 43 individuals, 29 of which were charged with more than 29,000 counts of child abuse.
Accusations stoked division in the community, and those most vulnerable to the flaws of the justice system saw their lives torn apart. And it was all for nothing. The ring, also known as “the Circle,” had never even existed.
