In horror movies, things are always bound to go terribly wrong—and doubly so when a pair of evil twins are involved.

Twins have continued to fascinate humankind through the ages—both with their similarities and differences. A part of the reason may be attributed to the “uncanny valley” hypothesis—something or someone that appears “almost human” provokes an eerie feeling in the viewer.

And certainly, the idea of a long-lost twin reappearing in your life or a shadowy doppelgänger dogging your every footstep is something to be afraid of. Horror movies tap into that primal fear, spinning stories about twins who haunt, harm, and sometimes may even heal.

One of last year’s most acclaimed movies, Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, featured a pair of devoted twin brothers as part of its primarily storyline. Through the course of the movie, these brothers find themselves on opposing sides, as one falls prey to vampirism.

If you’re in the mood for similar horror movies that double down on the spooks and scares, we have plenty of titles lined up. From cult classics to contemporary releases, here are seven evil twin horror movies!

Dead Ringers

One of David Cronenberg’s best films, Dead Ringers delves into the story of two identical twins, Elliot and Beverly.

Both men are highly successful gynecologists, although Elliot is more charismatic, while Beverly is the shy one. Consequently, whenever Elliot tires of a woman, she often ends up in bed with Beverly without being aware of the switch.

But this arrangement starts to slowly crumble when actress Claire Niveau enters the picture.

With terrific performances by Jeremy Irons and Geneviève Bujold, Dead Ringers is a deeply compelling and unsettling film.

Tin & Tina

A relatively recent release, Tin & Tina follows a couple, Lola and Adolfo, who adopt the eponymous twins after a tragic miscarriage.

There’s one small snag—the two angelic siblings seem to have an ultra-Catholic upbringing, prompting them to interpret the Bible quite literally, with terrifying consequences.

A powerful exploration of religious fanaticism and what brainwashed children can get up to, Tin & Tina makes for a rather chilling watch.

Flowers in the Attic

Based on V.C. Andrew’s 1979 novel of the same name, Flowers in the Attic, directed by Jeffrey Bloom, features not one, but two pairs of twins in a chilling Gothic narrative.

It follows the four Dollanganger siblings who are locked away in the attic by their cruel mother, right after their father’s death. The two twin teenagers, Cathy and Chris, try to protect the younger twin siblings, Cory and Carrie, even as they struggle with the turbulent situation.

From toxic family drama to unexpected twists, Flowers in the Attic is one hell of a psychological horror movie.

Sisters

This Brian de Palma film is considered a classic for a reason, pioneering the split-screen technique with suspenseful storytelling that will keep the viewer utterly gripped till the last frame.

The story follows Grace, a journalist who witnesses one of her neighbors kill a man, although the police don’t find any evidence of a crime. She's forced to take matters into her own hands and go down a grisly rabbit hole filled with disturbing secrets.

Creepy and compelling, Sisters still carries an enduring seductive charm, enticing modern viewers with ease.

The Twin

There are countless real-life stories of mothers losing one of their twins in some tragic accident, or a sibling being separated from their twin by a tragic twist of fate. The Twin, directed by Taneli Mustonen, taps into the horror, hurt, and grief prompted by such situations.

In this spooky narrative about a grieving family, Rachel, Anthony, and their son Elliot shift continents to deal with the grief of losing their beloved son and brother, Nathan, to a car accident.

From the deceased twin still making appearances to eerie cases of demonic possession, this film embraces supernatural evils with elan, with some terrific reveals thrown in!

The Other

Whether in movies or real-life, it is not uncommon for twins to share a special bond, reading each other’s minds with ease or sensing when the other is in danger. Some call it telepathy, others see it as familiarity, but in movies, it’s usually the former.

In that vein, The Other taps into a young boy’s paranormal abilities as he uses astral projection to keep his dead twin brother alive in his head, leading to several tragic consequences.

Based on Thomas Tyron’s novel and set in a rural environment, The Other is a uniquely satisfying psychological horror film.

Twins of Evil

Finally, this British horror film utilizes real-life twins Mary and Madeleine Collinson in a vivid narrative about witchcraft, vampirism, and religious puritanism, following the escapades of two sisters who move in with their uncle.

With gorgeous visuals, stellar acting, and an easy-to-follow plot layered with symbolism, Twins of Evil is quite the bewitching watch.
