The Halloween Tree
An eerie and enjoyable story set on Halloween night, The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury follows a group of costumed boys looking to join their friend in the merrymaking; instead, they are swept across space and time on an epic adventure and learn all about the hidden history and meaning of Halloween.
Just as A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens revisits the true spirit of the festival, so does Bradbury’s fantasy novel invoke the incredible magic and myths behind this cultural holiday with a thoroughly entertaining narrative that includes Celtic druids, Mexican rituals, Egyptian deities, Roman gods, and more.

Salem's Lot
A classic horror novel by one of the genre’s best authors, ’Salem’s Lot is the perfect scary book to reread during the spooky season. King crafts a terrifying tale involving vampires set in a small town with endearing characters and plenty of scares.
Along with the horror elements, the way King depicts a small-town community with vividly realistic details makes this book nothing short of remarkable. If you’re new to King’s works, this novel is an excellent place to start.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Finally, if you’re looking for a slim and short read that you can ideally finish one spooky evening, try The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. Deeply atmospheric with evocative descriptions, it tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a schoolteacher who comes to the quaint town of Sleepy Hollow, where plenty of creepy things are afoot, including a headless horseman, which might be terrifying enough to scare the poor man away...or not.
Enthralling and exciting, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a classic story that manages to be funny and eerie at the same time. If you enjoyed it, you can even check out Tim Burton’s stunning Hollywood adaptation of the same starring Johnny Depp and Chrisina Ricci. However, it takes some interesting liberties with the original plot.
Hallowe'en Party
Originally published in 1969, Agatha Christie’s Hallowe’en Party, the inspiration for the film A Haunting in Venice, begins at a Halloween party where thirteen-year-old Joyce claims she once witnessed a murder.
No one believes her, but hours later she is found dead, drowned in the apple-bobbing tub. Hercule Poirot is called in to investigate and must determine whether Joyce’s story was true—and whether her murder is connected to another killing.
This Halloween classic is a great option for those looking for something a little less on the scary side.

If you prefer short story collections to novels, Ned Halley’s anthology is a great choice for a Halloween read. Classic Halloween Stories collects several chilling stories about ghosts and ghouls and will definitely send shivers down your spine.
Featuring stories by O. Henry, Edith Wharton, Henry James and more, this one is perfect for those who’re looking for terrifying tales to read aloud in a darkened room, with all the lights and candles out.
Tales of Mystery and Imagination
One can never go wrong with the horror classics. In fact, my first introduction to the genre was via a tattered copy of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories I found in the local library, and though I was just ten at that time, the stories still continue to haunt me even now, some twenty years later.
Whether it’s the Gothic decadence of “The Fall of the House of Usher” or the fatal revenge plot in “The Cask of Amontillado” each of the stories in the collection is terrifying enough to keep you up at night. A timeless classic for any Halloween reading club.
Dracula
Another Halloween classic that first introduced the allure of aristocratic vampires to the reader, Bram Stoker’s Dracula may have actually been inspired by real-life bloodthirsty figures from history such as Vlad the Impaler and Elizabeth Bathory.
Unlike other Victorian novels, Dracula is told in a unique narrative format using letters, diary entries and newspaper reports, encouraging astute readers to piece together the narrative from the fragments, somewhat similar to Mary Shelley’s epistolary novel, Frankenstein.
A hugely influential book, Dracula is worth revisiting even in an age where we have too many stories involving bloodsucking creatures flooding the literary market.
