In the mood for a Halloween scare? You're in luck. Pet Sematary is coming back from the grave—and today we have our first look at the upcoming remake.

Horror filmmakers Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes) will resurrect Stephen King's sinister tale. While it's not slated for release until April 2019, today's trailer gives us a tantalizing glimpse of the terrors that await—and may soothe fears of horror fans wary of yet another Stephen King adaptation.

Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) and his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) pack the car, gather their children, and leave behind Boston for the peace and quiet of rural Maine. But all is not well at their new country home. Semi trucks roar past the driveway and frightening speeds, and deep in the woods is a mysterious burial ground. When tragedy befalls the Creed family, Louis attempts to harness the dark magic behind his family home. Needless to say, things do not go as planned.

Fans of the first Pet Sematary adaptation from 1989 will spot a number of familiar visions in today’s trailer. Crudely painted sign hanging over a foggy backwoods burial ground? Check. Undead, crazy-eyed cat you would never want to pet? Double-check. Yet fresh details suggest next year’s Pet Sematary will deliver a twisted new spectacle to horror movie fans. Take, for example, the kiddie funeral procession marching through the forest and dressed in freaky animal masks.

Jeff Buhler, one of Pet Sematary’s screenwriters, told Dread Central that they were on track to making "one of the scariest Stephen King adaptation ever." That’s a bold statement given the string of well-received recent Stephen King adaptations, from IT to Gerald’s Game. Nevertheless, the cast of Pet Sematary is promising, and all eyes are clearly on John Lithgow, who steps into Fred Gwynne's boots to play Louis Creed's doomed old neighbor Jud Crandall. Lithgow narrates the trailer, and his menacing delivery—warning of an evil force lurking in the woods—conjures just as much dread as those kids in their creepy masks. Count your blessings, mark your calendars, and get ready for the horror.

Pet Sematary hits theaters April 5, 2019.
