Since 2016, SyFy has been quietly releasing Channel Zero, an anthology miniseries that managed to escape the notice of many a horror fan. Its under-the-radar status is a shame–the inventive and often terrifying show combines the dark spirit of Black Mirror with a healthy dose of creepypasta.
Channel Zero’s first season took on the popular creepypasta Candle Cove. In this infamous fic written by Kris Straub, message board users swap memories of a strange television show they remember watching as children. But the trip down memory lane turns nightmarish as users recall more and more disturbing details about the sinister program.

In the Syfy adaptation, Paul Schneider (Parks and Recreation) plays a child psychologist who returns to his hometown to try to solve the long-dormant cold case of his twin brother’s murder. As he digs deeper, he realizes that the show they used to watch together, Candle Cove, may hold the key to the case. The deeper into the season you get, the more terrified you’ll become.

The second season took on the NoEnd House story and was able to elevate a rather mediocre tale into something truly horrifying. When teen best friends decide to visit the “No-End House” haunted house attraction that has mysteriously appeared in town, they get far, far more than they bargain for.
The third season of Channel Zero begins on Wednesday, February 7, so now is the perfect time to start watching. Whether you want to try out the current season or start at the beginning, Channel Zero will leave you quaking with fear. The third season, Butcher Block, will be based on the Search and Rescue Woods creepypasta series.
If you have a cable login, the first two seasons of Channel Zero are available to stream on SyFy’s website. If not, you can purchase the seasons on Amazon. We’ll be sitting on the couch, popcorn ready, until Butcher Block hits the screen.
